Steve Carson's Outdoors: Chico State Bass Club members named to All-America team

FLW Outdoors named the 2011 National Guard FLW College Fishing All-America Team this week, which included two Chico State students, along with two others from the north state. Honored among the nation's elite were Chico State's Parker Moran and Marshal Smith. Also included were Peter Lee and Robert Matsuura of Sacramento State.

Recently graduated with a degree in Organizational Communications, Smith said, "It's an honor to be selected as an All-American out of over 3,000 other students. I could have never done it without my team partner Parker Moran. The whole thing was a blast. It was the experience of a lifetime."

The FLW College Fishing circuit consists of 495 collegiate clubs and more than 3,300 anglers. All-America teams are selected through a point system that is based on the consistency of team performances in local tournaments and regional qualifiers in 2010, and the 2011 national championship.

Feather River

Shad anglers on the Feather River are doing well, reported local guide Kevin Brock.

"It's relatively easy for a couple of anglers in a boat to release well over 50 shad in an afternoon," Brock said. "Big numbers of shad are in the river just below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet. Even bank anglers can sometimes catch 5 to 10 shad in an hour, with the late afternoon being best. We are seeing some very large female fish in the four-pound class.

"All the usual jigs and flies are working well. A fluorescent orange or red head with a green body is standard, but we have also been catching fish on yellow or even pink/white. With flies, bigger and bulkier is better with the high water, and be sure to add a couple of split shot.

Chico Bass Club

The Chico Bass Club's June meeting included discussion of the club's longtime Florida-strain bass planting project on Lake Oroville. President Rich Cavanagh reported that lots of 13-14 inch largemouth bass are showing up in creel surveys to a greater degree than any time the past six years.

The club's May tournament took place at Lake Almanor during stormy conditions. In fact, the second day of the competition was canceled due to the threat of snow. Not a lot of fish were caught, but the winners reported that they caught their fish with 3.5-inch watermelon/black flake tubes, rainbow flukes, and five-inch Basstrix. Top finishers: Larry Myer, 9.38 pounds; Jeff Buckley, 7.84; Randy Bowersox, 2.73; Big Fish: Buckley, 2.90.
