There's no need for travel plans: This year's summer holiday could be just as relaxing, but closer to home.
"With the spike in oil prices, some people are still going to the cottage, but a lot of people are trying to make their backyard into a getaway," said Steve Gilboe of Patio Palace in London.
People are looking for more ways to spend time outdoors and the latest patio trends reflect a move to the backyard, Gilboe added.
The patio has become a new entertainment venue, showcasing items such as fireplaces, sectional pieces, coffee tables, bars, barstools, and lounge chairs.
Conversation groups, resembling traditional living-room furniture, are among the newer outdoor living trends. With loveseats, chairs and coffee tables, conversation pieces are lower in height than the typical outdoor dining set and offer a more relaxed seating arrangement for guests.
If the yard is large enough, Gilboe said many people prefer to buy both an outdoor-dining set and a conversation piece, allowing for a natural transition to entertaining after a meal. Conversation pieces are becoming more popular and make up more than 50% of outdoor furniture sales at Patio Palace.
Available in department and outdoor furniture stores, conversation pieces range from $300 for smaller, lower-end models, to over $4,000 for larger sets.
Fireplaces and fire pits, another growing trend in outdoor living, add to the living room feel in the backyard. There is a shift away form wood-burning fireplaces according to Gilboe, with innovative designs for gas models. While some resemble a hearth, many come with covers that transform them into a coffee table. Accents such as coloured glass stones underneath the flame add a modern look to the patio space.
Outdoor heaters in the form of accessory lamps fit right in while outdoor carpeting, gaining popularity, completes the look and feel of the living room.
Boosting comfort and shade in the backyard getaway is a larger, cantilevered umbrella that is more practical, affordable and could eliminate the need for an awning, Gilboe said. One of the latest patio trends, the offset umbrella can be placed anywhere shade is needed and can tilt and turn 360 degrees.
Just as durable as an awning, a cantilevered umbrella costs anywhere from $300 to $2,000.
Outdoor dining sets are getting bigger, Gilboe said, adding that the newest trend in backyard dining is adjustable tables with leaf inserts and square tables that increase space but maintain a cozy feel.
