They're masters at Blackburn Primary School, mate
IT was the battle of the minds when Blackburn Primary School took on chess masters from across the east last week.
The first round of the 2011 Chess Kids Interschool Chess Championships saw Blackburn Primary come up against students from Doncaster Primary School, St Luke the Evangelist School and View Bank Primary School.
Successful teams will move on to the state final, followed by the nationals.
A survey of 170 schools shows teachers believe students who play chess regularly are better mathematicians, problem solvers, communicators and better behaved than those who do not.
Chess champion and organiser David Cordover said technology would be the next big influence on the game in schools.
“Chess may be an ancient game, but it certainly won’t get left behind with the progression of technology,” he said.
“There are many ways that we are embracing technology: for instance, many schools are using our virtual chess lessons run via the web.
“We also use iPads to efficiently log game results during our major tournaments.”
