Palmetto Health issues go back years

Summerville - The staff of a treatment center for troubled teens have raised concerns years ago of the dangers escaped patient community should turn to violence to get sex and drugs.

It's just one of many revelations contained in the files of the State in the center run by Palmetto Summerville Behavioral Health and its sister facility in North Charleston and Florence. The Post and Courier asked the following two highly publicized escapes from the center Summerville this year.Among other things, the records show:

- The state investigated more than 30 complaints of fights, assaults, unexplained injuries and sexual misdeeds in Palmetto three facilities in South Carolina over the past five years.

- A psychiatrist at the center of Summerville veteran complained of the state in 2008 that the installation was to put patients at risk by accepting too many aggressive adolescents, failing to hire adequate staff and put pressure on workers' knock-out "youth with drugs to keep them in line.

- Staff discussed this same year the need for security to prevent escapes from the center Summerville. They fear that such escapes may place adolescents or community residents at risk of "acts of aggression".

- Although the fire code violations and record-keeping violations were comprehensively mapped, state regulators rarely cited any of the three centers of incidents involving assaults and injuries - even in cases where arrests were made.

- The problems mirror those experienced in other facilities operated in various states of the parent company Palmetto, Pennsylvania-based universal health care.

The Post and Courier filed a request for access to information for records with the Palmetto State Department of Health and Environmental Control, in April, but just received the documents last week, a $ 250.

The files contain gaps, heavy editorial and a number of handwritten documents that are difficult to decipher.It also includes reports of several investigations by the state Department of Social Services caseworkers, who used time mat the same language and again rejected allegations of abuse and neglect.

DHEC officials had no response Friday to questions about their records and actions. Palmetto officials said they could not answer the questions they received from the afternoon newspaper on Thursday allegations in the files of the State.

"We are unable to answer your questions at this time due to the short time we were given before the article was published," Palmetto, spokesman Stacey Lindbergh said."It is particularly difficult to answer questions that are several years old without the names or locations provided.

Medication for PTSD May Not Be Effective | Treatment Centers

A recent study shows that the drug risperidone, which is an antipsychotic, may not be as effective in reducing the severity of the disorder, post traumatic stress for veterans returning from combat.

The trial was a randomized, six-month study of the drug and showed that risperidone does not work better than placebo in relieving the typical signs of PTSD. It was also ineffective in controlling anxiety and depression, according to an MSNBC news report.

Dr. John H. Krystal, a professor at Yale and director of a division of the VA Center for PTSD, said PTSD is a huge problem.It is the disorder most expensive and most common to treat the Department of Psychiatry VA. Dr. Krystal said standard treatments such as Paxil and Zoloft help many people, but studies show that these drugs are not as effective with people who have had recurrent multiple trauma or PTSD.

Two years ago more than 80,000 veterans have been diagnosed with mental health problems such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and irritability associated with autism. Doctors turned to alternative medicines such as risperidone to complete their therapy.

The latest study shady about 250 veterans who were diagnosed with PTSD related to their military tour of duty. Half of these veterans have received risperidone and the other received only placebo. At the end of the study, researchers were shocked that risperidone was not more effective than placebo in reducing the severity of PTSD.

However, Krystal said the drug was effective in reducing side effects such as dreams, flashbacks and nightmares related to thoughts about the trauma experienced veterans during their visits.Typical side effects of medication include drowsiness and weight gain.
