Tech ed teacher leaves legacy in SLP community and beyond
Mark Voigt was recently vacationing with his wife near Hackensack, when a former student, now a professional plumber, recognized him. He thanked the technology education teacher for turning his life around.
“Without having those classes, I never would have finished high school,” he told Voigt.
The student, who Voigt taught eight years ago, was referring to classes he took in Spring Lake Park High School’s construction trades program – classes headed by Voigt.
Come this fall, students will return to school, but the program for a second year in a row will not be offered. Voigt won’t be there either.
Both the program and Voigt’s position have fallen victim to squeezed education budgets.
After working 29 years at the school, Voigt was laid off not only because of Spring Lake Park School District 16’s budget constraints, but because of low enrollment figures in elective classes, kids being unable to pack classes from what used to be a seven-period schedule into a six-period day.
Also, years of flat funding for education from the state has compounded the budget problem.
“When I was laid off, it was like a shock,” Voigt says in his mild manner. “But it surprised me. It was like my whole life, I was somehow always preparing for it.”
He built nine homes
During his tenure at Spring Lake Park, Voigt took on the long-established construction trades program.
He oversaw the building of nine single-family homes in Blaine and Spring Lake Park. Homes he and his students built from the ground up. The homes were sold, and in the days of a stronger real estate market, money netted from the sales was returned to the program to buy materials.
“Mark is one of a kind,” said Martha Wickman, who served on the advisory committee of the construction trades program. “I saw a dedicated man who wouldn’t cut corners; who wanted his product to be excellent in all ways and make sure kids would be learning a trade – not just show up and put in their time.”
But Voigt’s legacy reaches far beyond the nine new homes.
During his stay in SLP, he has taken students in his after-school tech groups (now called SkillsUSA) on field trips to gaze across the Grand Canyon, to check out behind-the-scenes construction at a Broadway Show in New York or to view the Alaskan Pipeline in Valdez, to name a few.
“He would research, set up and take kids literally all over the country,” said former SLP High School principal Glenn Martin. “He would take them to a shuttle launch or a paper milling factory in northern Minnesota. He would take them to see the technology out there, to expand their thinking, to give them a glimpse into their future.
