Blanton Museum Addes Twelve Contemporary Works ... - Dallas Art News

The Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin announces the acquisition of twelve new works for its contemporary collection. The paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by Melissa Miller, Jesse Amado, Dixie Friend Gay, Luanne Stovall, and five other celebrated Texas artists come to the museum through a lottery organized by The Dallas Museum of Art on behalf of collectors and Dallasites Nona and Richard Barrett. Blanton Director Simone Wicha remarks, “This special selection deepens our holdings of Texas art, adding additional works by some artists, and introducing new ones to our collection. We are grateful to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Barretts for this generous gift.”

This is the second lottery organized to distribute works from the esteemed Barrett collection to museums across the state. Desiring to enhance the reputation of art of this region and to augment the holdings of Texas museums, the couple donated a robust 305 works to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from 1998-2000. Seventy-six were accessioned into the MFAH collection, and a lottery was established in 2003 to distribute the remaining work to other Texas institutions. In a similar process, the Dallas Museum of Art extended invitations to The Blanton, The Old Jail Art Center, The Austin Museum of Art and several other museums to participate in the lottery for works from the Barrett’s 2010 gift to the DMA.
