Myrtle Beach Area Restaurant Notes

Phyllis Highsmith was the youngest stewardess hired by United Airlines (in 1967, at age 18), and then had a long career with Piedmont Airlines as a corporate manager before she owned two restaurants in Fayetteville, N.C. She tried retirement, but the active woman was eager to get back in the biz to partner up with her cousin and launch two locations of - one in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. and one in North Myrtle Beach. The menus at both locations include 10 thick and juicy hand-patted burgers ($2.89-$6.69), hot dogs, sandwiches and baskets. For you 'cue fans, Highsmith has two pits where she makes North Carolina-style hand-pulled smoked barbecue. Beaches Burgers & Grill is at 1020 Sea Mountain Highway in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach, and the number is 663-5777. It's open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

on July 6, he continued a Socastee tradition started by his grandmother, Ridley Mason. In 1980 she retired from her job as cafeteria manager at the former Myrtle Beach U.S. Air Force Base, and her husband built her a little concrete block building on family land that she opened as Ridley's Hot Dogs. The spot was famous for her chili dogs. Now those dogs are back on the table along with Trey Mason's gourmet sandwiches. He has worked in Grand Strand restaurants all his life, and is making specialties ($2-$7) such as The Naked Lady with turkey, bacon, roasted red pepper sauce, garlic basil sauce, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, red onions and alfalfa sprouts; and The Pipeline, which is a French dip with roast beef, Swiss cheese and jus. The rest of the menu is a variety of frozen treats featuring a dozen flavors of Blue Bunny Ice Cream. Beach Boys Deli is at 4002 Socastee Blvd., Myrtle Beach, and the number is 293-2430. It's open from 11 a.m. until at least 9 p.m. daily.

Two restaurant scams that have been circulating for more than a year are resurfacing this summer in the Myrtle Beach area. In one, someone calls claiming to be from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and tries to get personal information from the restaurant owner. In the second, a special phone service for deaf and hard of hearing people is used to place large (and fraudulent) catering orders, and a smooth-talking person tries to get the restaurant owner to give money back on an "overpayment." Restaurant owners and workers should never give credit card information or Social Security Numbers to such callers.
