Mammoth Motocross: Granddaddy of Them All
Back in 1968 Don Rake and some friends decided to put on a motocross in Mammoth Lakes, California. They built a world-class track 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Dave McCoy came along and offered the backing of his Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and the rest is history.
Every summer racers have flocked to Mammoth Mountain for this classic event. It is the oldest continuous running motocross in the USA. The track has changed a little over the years, but the fun hasn’t.
Many of the top racers in the world have honed their skills at this event. There have been some epic battles over the years and many racers have made a name for themselves on this track. Riders like Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Rick Johnson, Johnny O’Mara, Broc Glover, Donny Schmitt, Steve Lamson, Gary Jones, Kevin Windham, David Bailey, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien, Bob Hannah, James Stewart, Mike Bell, Donny Hansen and many more. It also become one of the major amateur events in the country as well. You can see the factory riders of tomorrow racing in the mini classes at Mammoth today.

In my eyes there is only one acceptable place to race. Mike's Hobby Shop. I recently went to Indy with some other racers on a saturday night. Ummm i do not have anything good to say at all about that place. I had heard it was being cleaned up and was a really nice place now. Man i would have not wanted to see it when i was dirty and non maintained. I will not be back to Indy anytime soon. I'm not in the Dallas area so I'm not part of the "scene" but I have done a few RCPro races at Indy and I have to admit, I liked them all. They were very well run, fast and smooth, the tracks were good for the most part layout-wise, and for an RC track, the facilities are on the better side (indoors, chairs, tables provided, hobby shop, etc.). Thing is we have three killer spots to run 1/8 scale off road around the DFW area. I too wish the three would have a Godfather dinner and come to a conclusion. Not so much about who races on what days but about a points series. I hear talks of big races diluting the club racing pool and totally agree. So why not create your own local series and give racers a reason to visit them all. When I ran the Southwest Series (dirt oval) I did my best to include all the local shops and shops in Oklahoma in my points series. Doing that made everybody happy and no one track / shop was left out. Each track has its merits and its shortfalls. This "knocking a track" thing is counterproductive to the overall big picture of 8th scale offroad racing in Dallas. There will be some that likes Indy, some that likes Mike's, and some that will go to both tracks. Enjoy the fact that at least you have choices. I have been reading that some in other areas don't have that choice because their only track shutdown/went-out-of-business and have no place locally to race. But when I want to race my 1/8 buggy, the track I prefer is Indy. I like running with the nitro guys, I really like that it's indoor, and the people there have been great. I also like that there is some dirt oval going on there, and keep thinking I would like to give that a go. I have not made it over to Wild Bill's oval track...but keep meaning to.
