Basking in Buffett's glow

Both have their own fashion customs: gothic clown face paint for juggalos, Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts for Parrotheads.

Juggalos drink Faygo. Parrotheads, of course, enjoy margaritas.

Juggalos throw things at performers they dislike. Parrotheads bombard themselves with beach balls — none of the Parrotheads who filled the Comcast Center Saturday seemed to mind the wildly excessive number of beach balls that popped up and down onto unsuspecting heads before Buffett took the stage.

Makes you think: Perhaps ICP and Buffett should collaborate. ICP clearly have no idea how to write a song, and Buffett could certainly teach them.

Sure, his tropical island motif shtick gets tacky. But “Cheeseburger in Paradise”? That’s a good song. “Peanut Butter Conspiracy”? Also a good song.

In fact, by far the worst song he and his 11-member Coral Reefer Band played Saturday was one Buffett didn’t write himself — “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” a mammoth country hit Buffett recorded with Alan Jackson.

Even hard-core Parrothaters have to be impressed by the 60-something Buffett’s ability to sell-out the 20,000 capacity Comcast Center, especially after a 40-year career, and at a time when tickets to big summer concerts aren’t generally selling like hot cakes.

Having apparently fully recovered from falling off a stage in Australia early this year, Buffett recomposed the lyrics to “Boat Drinks” to make it a Bruins [ team stats ] anthem, and wore a home team T-shirt with “uffett” tagged on beside the “B” logo. This might’ve seemed like pandering, had he not repeatedly referred to the Comcast Center by its erstwhile title, “Great Woods,” and name-checked WBCN [ website ] for supporting his classic “Come Monday” back in the day before anyone knew who he was.
