Two Alabama women golfers qualify for tournaments

Two Alabama women golfers will be playing on big stages this summer.

Sophomore Jennifer Kirby and freshman Stephanie Meadow qualified for separate tournaments after big seasons for the Crimson Tide.

Kirby will play in the 2011 U.S. Women's Open at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado on July 7-10. Kirby finished fourth at the U.S. Women's Open Sectional Qualifier in Agawam, Massachusetts after shooting a 2-over-par total of 146, four shots off the winner.

Kirby is one of 70 players who qualified through the sectional qualifying process, and will be one of 20 amateurs to compete.

The Paris, Ontario, Canada native helped lead the Crimson Tide to their second straight top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships. Kirby was the 2010 SEC Freshman of the Year, a first-team All-SEC selection, and a Golfweek third-team All American her first year. In her sophomore campaign, she was named a second-team All-SEC selection.

This will Kirby's second straight appearance in the U.S. Women's Open, and the fourth consecutive a Crimson Tide golfer has competed in the event. Kathleen Ekey played in the 2008 and 2009 Opens.

Meadow will compete in the Ladies' British Amateur beginning on Tuesday, June 7 at Royal Portrush, just 56 miles from Meadow's hometown of Jordanstown, Northern Ireland.

The freshman was exceptional in her first season with the Tide. Meadow was named a first-team NCGA All-American after her first season, the first true freshman to earn those honors in Tide history. She also set the single-season school record with a 72.15 stroke average.  She also won three tournaments, including the NCAA East Regional.
