Lily salvaged: Gardeners' joy as ?shy? flower blooms for first time in seven ...
A rare species of ‘shy’ lily which blooms just once in seven years has finally shown itself – and our photographer was there to capture the moment.
The prized Giant Lily – on display at a Cheshire stately home – remains tightly closed before bursting into flower just before it dies.
Growing to twice the height of a man, the Himalayan plant is notoriously difficult to cultivate.
Dunham Massey in Cheshire is one of the few places in Britain where it has been successfully grown.
Gardeners at the National Trust estate have lovingly nurtured one of the country’s biggest collections - and were this week rewarded with a rare treat.
As part of its spectacular swansong, the rare species slowly opens its petals and releases a delicious perfume.
But just like its household equivalent, the heart-shaped petals last only a few days before being scattered by the wind.
The bulbs were first planted at Dunham Massey in the early 1980s and after careful nurturing there are now more than 100 plants.
The six-strong gardening team have avoided pesticides to avoid damaging the delicate stems. Instead they painstakingly pick marauding bugs and slugs from the flowers by hand.
The lilies - known in Latin as cardiocrinum giganteum - grow very slowly to a height of two feet in their first few years, but rocket to up to 12ft in their final season.
After flowering in June, the plant withers to leave a collection of conker-sized seedpods.
Damian Harris, the estate’s head gardener, said he and his team had anxiously awaited the incredible bloom.
He said: "The plant resembles a normal lily that you might find in a florist shop - it’s a large white flower with a crimson throat - except that it’s twice my height.
"It is very difficult to get it to grow to this country. It needs a lot of looking after.
"As a result, not many people get to see it when the lily finally blooms.
"They require constant care but it’s very rewarding to finally see them in bloom.
