Shares of Lumber Liquidators rise on upgrade

Shares of Lumber Liquidators Holdings Inc. rose Thursday as one analyst boosted his rating for the hardwood flooring retailer, saying that the company is poised for market share growth and that its current stock price makes it a good bet.

THE SPARK: John Baugh of Stifel Nicolaus raised his rating for the company to "Buy," from "Hold" and set a $31 price target.

THE BIG PICTURE: Despite a tough economic environment, Lumber Liquidators has been able to grow its business. In the years since the industry's 2005 peak during the housing boom, the company's sales have jumped from $245 million to $620 million and it has nearly tripled the number of its stores. That's despite a 30 percent drop in the dollar value of the overall industry through 2010, Baugh said.

THE ANALYSIS: "Lumber Liquidators is a category killer in wood and laminate flooring and it is getting more influential in size," Baugh wrote in a note to investors.

The analyst added that while investors tend to think that Lumber Liquidators' main competition are the giant home improvement retailers, it actually competes more directly with small, independent flooring dealers that don't carry inventory, have less to pick from and charge higher prices. This represents an on-going opportunity for Lumber Liquidators to pick up market share, Baugh said.

SHARE ACTION: Up 48 cents, or 2 percent, to $24.86 in midday trading.
