Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Clinical Trials

The space between the brain and the thin covering tissues of brain is known as Subarachnoid Space. Any type of bleeding in that area is described as Subarachnoid Hemorrhage .

There are causes of hemorrhage. It can be related to some type of arteriovenous malformation or bleeding from a cerebral aneurysm or head injury. It can also occur as an after effect of using blood thinner medications. Persons with high blood pressure, excessive smoking, connective tissue disorder or polycystic kidney disease are at a higher risk for Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

The major symptom of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage is excruciating headache at the back portion of the head. The pain can be associated to some sort of popping feeling inside the head. The excessive pain affects the alertness and consciousness of the person. It can also cause nausea, vomiting, seizure, muscle aches, vision problem, stiff neck etc. In certain situations, a person can be in coma after having Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

To diagnose Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, one needs to go through a head CT scan, as soon as possible. Other than this, cerebral angiography, neurological exam, eye exam, MRI and ultrasound tests might be required to support the diagnosis. Treatment is performed with the intention of saving the life, treating the cause for bleeding and preventing permanent damage to brain. Surgery is performed, to remove the collected blood from that area. In case of aneurysm, surgery helps to repair the problem. In other cases, the patient is closely monitored at intensive care unit by providing all kinds of life support. The treatment becomes complicated, when the person goes into a coma. Complete bed rest is prescribed for the patients, who has recovered from Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Painkillers and antidepressants are used to control the respective symptoms.

There are currently 38 different interventions being investigated in Subarachnoid Hemorrhage clinical trials. These clinical trials are being conducted in 62 cities and are being performed by 100 different clinical trial investigators (doctors who conduct and supervise the clinical study). There are 27 Subarachnoid Hemorrhage trials currently active in the United States. A total of 2 Phase I, 4 Phase II and 2 Phase III clinical trials are currently active for Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (the phases represent the different stage in the development of a treatment for a given condition.
