Keysborough teen number cruncher off to banking school
ING Bun loves numbers.
The Keysborough College student, 16, has already decided she wants a career in accounting and is on her way to success.
“Somehow, when I work with numbers, I understand it, it’s like natural,” Ing said.
The Springvale South student has been selected to go to Sydney for five days next month to attend the UBS Finance Academy at Macquarie University.
The academy gives public secondary school students banking education with a mixture of theory, industry exposure and field visits.
“It’s an opportunity for students to explore the career options in finance and we get to meet business people and leaders,” Ing said.
She could not speak English on arriving from Cambodia with two younger sisters and parents. She felt embarrassed about her accent.
“The first year was very difficult,” she said. “I talked in front of the mirror, I used grammar books ... children’s illustrated dictionaries, to improve.”
Ing, who attended English language school for seven months before starting primary school, is now college vice-captain and received the Kwong Lee Dow scholarship from Melbourne University.
