Do i need the spark screen on my muffler if i dont live in calfornia on my husqvarna 455 rancher chainsaw?

i live in ohio and have a 455 rancher bought from lowes and i think that its a california model and has a spark screen on the muffler to catch sparks from lighting timber, the manual says its for hot dry places like out west but its hot and humid or cold here and i think the saw will run just a bit better without it in or does it really matter if its there or not? the other model i saw that husqvarna sell has a muffler with a hole in the right side mine is on top with a screen i will just take the screen out and use the saw and see if there is a difference, i don't need to buy another muffler when the screen comes out of this one. i think having the screen on the muffler wont let the saw cool properly, a screen on the fireplace blocks a bunch of heat compaired to it not being there, i think the saw will do the same thing that screen will block heat from escaping the muffler

The spark arrest screen is just that to stop any sparks from escaping the muffler. It is not a California only thing. It is mandated on all outdoor power equipment. Removal will not increase performance enough that you will notice. This has nothing to do with heat as that the screen is some distance away from the heat source. The cooling fins and the oil that is mixed in the gas, they are responsible for cooling the cylinder.

Extra protection in regard to safety, is always a good thing…The muffler with the screen on it is a spark arrestor and should not decrease the performance of the chain saw. I live in California and my chainsaw works great! Of course, the only way to actually know for sure is to test it. Purchase a muffler without the screen and put it on your chainsaw. Run it and see how it performs. If it’s the same, put the spark arrestor type back on for added protection.

The main disadvantage of having a screen is that if you use too rich a mixture or if your saw is set too rich then the screen will get full of carbon. If this happens your saw will start good but you won’t be able to rev it up to usual speed.

You can always clean it but I removed it completely from all my saws, there’s a couple of screws that holds it there.
