What was a mundane Monday night for residents in the Union Township area, southeast of Le Mars, quickly turned into a nightmare.

It was about 9:40 p.m. on Monday when Bob and Jeanne Bohnenkamp heard a noise they described as a racecar.

"I said to my husband, 'that sounds funny,'" Jeanne said.

The two made a quick dash to the basement for cover -- less than five minutes later everything was still, she said.

"I had never experienced anything in my 33-years of living here quite like that," Bob said.

Not sure what happened, the couple went to check out the damage.

"We came upstairs and I was looking out of our bedroom window," Jeanne said. "I looked to the east and saw metal spread across our lawn."

From a different room Jeanne heard an exclamation from her husband.

"I just saw all of this metal on our lawn, and I was trying to guess where it was from," Bob explained.

Since they had no electricity they were using flashlights to see the damage.

"Our neighbors from across the road, the Felts, were out looking at the damage as well," Jeanne said. "It so happened that it was their shed all over our front lawn."

Jackie Felts said that she and her husband and two sons had just gotten home from a baseball game when the storm hit.

"The walls were vibrating, it sounded like shotgun shells were being fired, and water was coming into the basement." Felts explained. "Our French doors upstairs were being pushed inward and water was seeping in."

Within a couple of minutes it was over.

"We looked out our window and knew that it was bad when we could see the contents of our shed," Felts said.

The neighbors called 911 to report what had happened. Shortly after the Plymouth County Sheriff's's Office and the EMS were on site.

The emergency services checked around to make sure that everyone was okay.

Knowing that nothing could be done Monday night, the neighbors parted to face the unknown in the morning.

After a restless night, they saw what really happened.

"The Felts' pole building was picked up and flew across the road to our front lawn," Bob said. "Before it landed in our front lawn, it hit my station, causing some structural damage."

There were also many trees down in the area, including two of their pear trees, Jeanne added.

Realizing what lay ahead of them, Bob said, "It was like we were in a daze and we were just on auto-pilot.
