BMW's X3 is a perfect replacement for X5

When BMW introduced its first “sport activity vehicle,” the X5, there were few things like it. Now X-cars litter the automotive landscape like so many wagons on steroids, more than half of the X3’s dozen or so competitors have an X in the name.

So where does the X3 fit? Right where the X5 left off when it grew to three-row size. And it opens a space for the X1, which will end up near the size of the original X3.

Like many companies BMW is able to introduce new small cars because the existing ones keep growing. This new X3 essentially has the same wheelbase and length of the first X5 of a decade ago, but is wider and lower. Head and legroom front and rear haven’t changed so you’d notice a small difference only three-across in back or in cargo space. The X5 also towed nearly twice the trailer, but few owners towed anything.

The X3 offers two purring three-liter engines: a 240 horsepower in the xDrive28 and a turbocharged 300-hp in the xDrive35. The latter, an International Engine of the Year for 2011, is dubbed ”Twin Power” but uses a single turbocharger, and it’s the low-end punch and direct-injection that makes it so efficient. It gets the 4,200-pound X3 to 60 mph in less than six seconds, feels like it has unlimited unstressed power at virtually any engine speed and delivers incrementally better mileage than the 240-hp version but adds about $3,400 to the price.

Both engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission and the E-shift joystick lever: Push forward to go backwards, backwards to go forward or manually. As an automatic it’s flawless in any mode and takes advantage of the torque to minimize shifting. It doesn’t “disconnect” from Drive to Park or Neutral instantly like older transmissions did, but, shifted manually, it’s not so smooth and occasionally felt confused. Under moderate acceleration it backs off power to smooth the shift (and potentially save hardware) and it feels its taking a bigger breather than it needs to. The all-wheel drive retains much of BMW’s rear-drive dynamics while allowing full use of the power in rain or corners.

Adjacent the shifter are chassis control switches. The sport setting adds effort to the steering but not feel or accuracy and since the normal mode works so well that’s where I left it even on the best roads. The ride is settled, the handling free of vices and suitable for an enthusiast and the brakes are solid. Few crossovers match the X3’s dynamics or the sheer speed of the 35i, but for potential xDrive28 buyers BMW’s own 3-series wagon offers a choice of transmissions, equally smooth 230-hp six, better driving dynamics and weighs 500 pounds less.
