Wear sunscreen, and other tips
They wear goggles but not ear plugs. Thus they hear. Rowdy Gaines said the noise generated by 10,000 to 12,000 fans most nights of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials had to at least play a part in what happened at Qwest Center Omaha, when numerous records were broken and some upstarts pulled off surprises. You might think the noise is muted for swimmers...Ladies and gentleman of the Class of 1999,
You're 30 now. ... I hope you've been wearing sunscreen.
At this time of year 12 years ago, you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing the informal anthem for the class of '99 — “Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen),” a novelty record put together by Baz Luhrmann. Yes, the same Baz Luhrmann who directed “Moulin Rouge” and “Romeo + Juliet.”
The song wasn't exactly a song. It was a newspaper column read over dance music. Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich had written the column in 1997 as the graduation speech no one had invited her to give.
The piece went viral, in the early days of viral, and for a while everyone thought it had been written by Kurt Vonnegut.
(Note to Baz Luhrmann: Please feel free to set any of my columns to music. I wrote one about a diabetic cat that you might like. Also, feel free to tell people that it was written by Kurt Vonnegut.)
The thing about “Wear Sunscreen” is, it's packed with really good advice. This isn't “The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” or “Graduation (Friends Forever)” by Vitamin C. ...
If the Class of 1999 actually took that song to heart, they might be the most enlightened not-so-young adults ever.
“Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth.”
Does Mura O'Neill-Rohe remember “Wear Sunscreen”?
Of course.
“It was on the radio constantly.” And she liked it, even though she and her friends at Ralston High were more into Green Day.
Did she take any of it to heart?
Of course not.
“I remembered the ‘wear sunscreen' part,” Mura said. But it wasn't until she revisited the lyrics this week that she realized how powerfully smart the advice was. Especially about appreciating your youth and beauty. And your knees.
It's great advice, she said, but not great advice for an 18-year-old.
“You can't ever impart wisdom on young people that way,” Mura said. “You don't get it until you're there. That's the human condition, I think.
