Despite report, Finch to Rockets not a done deal, Vipers GM says

Despite a Houston-area report that Rio Grande Valley Vipers coach Chris Finch is headed to the Houston Rockets as an assistant, Vipers general manager Gersson Rosas told The Monitor that’s not the case.

Not officially, anyway.

The Houston Chronicle reported on Friday that Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said that Finch has filled one of the assistants’ spots for recently-named head coach Kevin McHale. Rosas said that report is not accurate.

“Chris has been here in Houston over the past few weeks assisting us with our pre-draft workouts as he typically would during this time of year,” said Rosas, who is also the Rockets’ vice president for player personnel. “He has been working closely with Coach McHale, but we have not yet made any final official decisions relating to our assistant coaching staff. We hope to have our staff announced in the coming weeks.”

Finch could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Finch has coached the Vipers for the past two seasons, leading them to the NBA Development League Finals each season. The Vipers won the 2009-10 league title in his first season. The Rockets have long considered Finch an NBA coaching candidate since his arrival to the Valley. Houston plucked Finch, who also coaches the British national team, from Europe where he had a successful coaching career to bring him to the Valley shortly after the Rockets obtained the operating rights for the Vipers two summers ago.

McHale has not hired any assistants, Rosas said, but the Rockets hope to name them within two to four weeks.
