Early in the season, teams show promise of developing strengths

Rangers head coach Jim Turner was waiting for his offense to start hitting. In a Jersey City RBI game at Cochrane Stadium tonight against the Giants (1-1), Turner's offense did their coach proud.

The Rangers (1-1) scored 10 runs on only five hits, but also showed patience in working 13 walks on the way to a 10-4 win.

"This is something we should have been doing," said Turner. "I think we're on the right path right now to do what we plan to do and that is to be very competitive in this league.

"We have some good athletes, have a lot of speed on the bases, have some good pitching and a great defense in my opinion, and I think that'll take us a long way."

Kevin Singh picked up the complete game victory for the Rangers. He was efficient with his pitches, throwing only 67 in seven innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits and only one walk. He also struck out two.

"His performance was outstanding," Turner said.

"He threw well, his control was pretty good. He had only 67 pitches in seven innings -- unreal. He's not in shape yet, but once he gets in shape and is ready to go, he should do a little bit better."

The Rangers scored in the top of the first without notching a hit as they drew six walks, and thanks to a few defensive errors, put up three runs to start the game.

But the Rangers took control of the game in the top of the fifth, when the score was 4-2. After the first two batters got on base, left fielder Fraymi Rodriguez smashed a pitch to deep left field. The ball sailed well over the left fielder's head, giving Rodriguez plenty of time to score on a three-run inside-the-park home run.

First baseman Terrell Bradley later tallied an RBI single, and scored on a wild pitch to score the Rangers' fifth run of the inning and give them a 9-2 lead.

The Giants, however, mounted a small rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, third baseman Raul Perez drew a walk and catcher Steven Torres was hit by a pitch to bring left fielder Trevon Fugua to the plate. With two strikes on him, Fugua sent a fly ball into the gap in right field that dropped in for a two-run double.

Giant assistant coach Michael Oliva stressed that in this summer league he wants to see his team, especially the younger players, put out their best effort and enjoy themselves.

"Basically this is a summer league where we want everyone to start playing," he said,.
