Parents Want County To Allow Logan Jenkins To Go To School With Siblings
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (WUSA) -- An entire community is rallying to support a child with Down Syndrome in Charles County. Logan Jenkins is about to start his first year of high school. All his parents ask is that he be allowed to attend the same school as his brothers and friend. The only problem -- the county says they can't allow it.
Spend a few minutes with Logan and you'll see he's a social machine. Perhaps it's the fact his younger brother is like a twin, or he's the fifth of six kids. Whatever it is, his mother Kim says it's a large part of his personal development.
And this past spring, when he graduated from eighth grade, he did so with fresh memories of his last dance when his sister chaperoned. So naturally, he'd want those same peers surrounding him when he starts high school next fall.
But his parents say following a review of his individual assessment plan, they were told by the school he couldn't attend his local high school. So the family launched a process to appeak that decision, and reluctantly shared their story online.

Birth of Zac – “Your child has Down's Syndrome” » Matt Evans Online
Seven years ago, our son, Zac was born in a hospital in Portsmouth, Hampshire. On a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon in May, we turned up at the hospital with great excitement that our second child was on the way. Two hours later, Zac was born onto the floor in the birthing room. The delivery was much easier than our first, with the help of gas and air and a big exercise ball to lean against.
Seeing Zac for the first time was breathtaking – he was wonderful. The thought of having a boy was mind blowing. I had a daughter (Beth) from a previous marriage and Val and I had Caitlin four years earlier. A boy was going to be a different story all together! I was imagining playing football in the park with him, play fighting, mending things together.
Something inside me knew that the huge bump in Val’s tummy was a boy. Several weeks before Zac was born, Val and I were debating over names. I was washing up in the kitchen at the time and a name came to me out of the blue: Zachary David John. I know this sounds a little spooky, but I felt that God had given me the name.
There was also another feeling inside that kept coming to me during Val’s pregancy. Val had felt it too, but had not said anything to me. I felt that this baby would be born with something special. I know it sounds very convenient to say that now, but it is the truth. Both Val and I separately were thinking about Down’s Syndrome. However, it was something I didn’t want to consider and kept pushing it to the back of my mind. In fact, Val had been offered a test to detect Down’s Syndrome a few months earlier; our doctor practically insisted on it. We were determined not to know as we said we would not consider aborting any child, a living human being, for our own convenience. We were very grateful that the specialist we saw at the hospital understood our point of view and didn’t push it any further.
So, Zac was born and we were obvlious for the first hour that there was a ‘problem’. I went out of the hospital to make calls on my mobile phone to very excited grandparents. It was after I went back in to see Val and Zac that the bottom dropped out of my world. Zac had been checked over by the nurses and they said that they wanted to speak with us about something. She then said that Zac had certain characteristics (a single crease on his hands, lowered ears and slightly flater head at the back), which indicated that he possibly had Down’s Syndrome.
