Top jockey to ride in tonight's Expo Square Stakes

When you've won the past three times on a horse that has won more than $200,000 in his short career, you tend to follow that horse trailer to the next stop.

Consequently, the Fair Meadows at Tulsa crowd Saturday night will be treated to the presence of jockey G.R. Carter, who will be aboard De Passem Okey in the $20,000 Expo Square Stakes, the 9-5 morning line favorite. Carter is a native Pawhuskan who now lives in the Oklahoma City area.

On June 1, 2008, the 43-year-old jockey became the all-time top money earner in American Quarter Horse racing history as he passed the previous record of $41,405,207 in purse money. Since then, he has continued to ride circles around his competition and has padded those earnings to more than $52 million.

Carter has been named the AQHA World Champion Jockey eight times in his career and is currently ranked as the No. 1 rider in the country, with his horses banking $2.4 million in less than half a year. Carter took home the top prize in the country in six consecutive years (2003-2008).

He has ridden 450 times this year, according to the AQHA website, and has won 89 of those starts, finished second 78 times and third 62 times.

Oklahoma is a major contributor as the top state in the country to this category. The top four jockeys in the country ride in the Sooner State on a regular basis - Carter, Jacky Martin, Jimmy Brooks and Larry Payne.

Carter has won the All-American Futurity twice, commonly referred to as the Kentucky Derby for the quarter horse genre.

He grew up in Pawhuska where he was a state champion wrestler at 108 pounds and state champion gymnast. When he wasn't in the workout rooms, he was rodeoing. He started galloping racehorses at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw when he was 14 to raise money for his rodeo entry fees. A couple of years later he was an official jockey and the rest is history.

De Passem Okey, whom he will get a leg up on for the Expo Square Stakes, is a solid 5-year-old gelding by Okey Dokey Dale. De Passem Okey loves Fair Meadows as he has won three of his five starts here, including the Walter Merrick Stakes last summer.

He has won three races in a row and seven of his last 10. Two of his last three starts have been in stakes company.
