Shore groups plan Flag Day activities
Today is the national celebration of Flag Day, which observes the adoption of the American flag as the country's official symbol.
In observance of what has became the American representation of freedom and unity, citizens are urged to fly a flag for the duration of the week.
There have been more than 28 versions of the American flag, and plans have been made for designs to incorporate up to 56 stars.
Why is Flag Day held June 14?
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the official flag of the United States as part of the Flag Resolution of 1777.
What did the Flag Resolution of 1777 say?
The resolution stated the flag would be 13 stars and 13 alternating red and white stripes, with each representing one of the 13 colonies.
When was Flag Day established?
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a presidential proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day.
When did Flag Day become a national observance?
On Aug. 3, 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.

» Students of Charles H. Chipman Elementary, 711 Lake Street in Salisbury, will celebrate Flag Day with patriotic songs, readings and poems about America and the flag. They will honor veterans and relatives of the school family who are serving our country. The program will begin in the cafeteria at 10:30 a.m. Call 410-677-5814.
» Salisbury Elks 817, in conjunction with Boy Scout Troop 817, will host a Flag Day ceremony at 6 p.m., in front of the Lodge at 401 Churchill Ave. in Salisbury. The annual event represents the history of the American flag. Each version of the flag since the country was founded will be on display, including a Gadsden flag, which reads "Don't tread on me," as well as a flag with 13 stars. The Scouts will explain the story behind each flag. Call 410-742-2104.
» American Legion Post 16 in Crisfield will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 6 p.m. at 126 Lorrie Quinn Drive. A flag drop-off bin for unserviceable flags is located in front of the post home. The ceremony will follow the U.S. flag code protocol for incineration and burial of the ashes. Refreshments will be served. Call 410-968-2415.
» The town of Ocean City will observe Flag Day with a special ceremony. Mayor Rick Meehan will lead a brief program recognizing veterans and the flag, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Ocean City Police Department Color Guard will present the colors and the crowd will sing the national anthem. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. and will be held on Flag Plaza at Northside Park, located at 125th Street and the bay. Call 410-250-0125.
