Kobo's 'Read On Revolution' Makes First Award for 10 Million Minutes Read

, Who teaches remedial reading for 9th and 10th grade students, saw a post about the Read On Revolution on the Kobo Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/kobo ) and rallied the school community to join the One Trillion Minute Challenge.  DeClercq saw a great opportunity to unite his students in a common goal to read more and potentially bring a digital reading program into his school.

"I'm always looking to improve my students' reading experience.  Being able to provide access to a wide variety of eBooks through Kobo's eReaders and mobile apps can show my students that beyond being important, reading can be fun," said DeClercq.  "Many of my students have not grown up reading and have not had a home library.  The excitement and joy of watching students read a book for the first time in their lives is truly amazing.  I'd like to thank Kobo for this important donation."

ONE Trillion Minute Challenge Winners: Buena Park HS — Kobo

Yesterday, we told you we were going to announce the first recipient of the ONE Trillion Minute Challenge.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the first recipient is:

Buena Park High School in Buena Park, California

Located in Orange County, California, Buena Park High School has 2000 students, who are dedicated to reading.

Buena Park High School once held the Guinness Record for the longest continual reading. The faculty are always engaging students to read, with events such as “Read around The Clock,” which is a “reading relay” whereby students  take turns reading for 15 minutes each, around the clock.

The school has a large ‘English as a second language’ population, and has a higher percentage of lower income families. Couple this with the fact that Buena Park is also suffering from budget cuts, it has been very difficult for them to build and maintain a library which will encourage their students to read.

The faculty is incredibly dedicated to their students, and they wanted to share some of their big success stories with us:

One of Adam DeClercq’s students struggled to finish a single book, but was encouraged after finding the Hunger Games series and now he’s hooked! One student improved her reading level by a few grade levels this year. One student, using the printed word and it’s corresponding book on tape, was able to find the key to unlock a love of reading. “I love the students I work with and am always looking for ways to improve their reading experience.  This seemed like a perfect opportunity to do that.  I have been teaching reading for years and have frequently had the joy of watching students read a book for the first time in their lives.  I’ve seen excitement spark in their eyes and heard the thrill of reading in their voices.  I know that sounds like a “movie of the week”  kind of answer, but it is very true.  I get to see non-readers turn into readers and that is one of the greatest accomplishments of my career.”

This is a fantastic story from a great Canadian company that makes a person proud to be a Canuck and most of all proud to be a reader. Reading enriches lives in so many ways and makes for better educated, more civilized, more responsible citizens of the world. This story really is one of those ‘Oprah’ worthy inspiring moments. I’m hoping to get a kobo touch in the near future as well. It seems they’re doing so well they’re sold out everywhere.
