Watercraft racing comes back to Anderson

For the second time in two years, the International Jet Sport Boating Association is bringing its Triple Crown Watercross tournament to the Anderson area. Competition is all day Saturday and Sunday on the water in front of Sadlers Creek State Park, and spectators are welcome.

The sponsored event has no admission price other than the standard state parking fee at Sadlers Creek, which is $2 per adult, said Kathy Benson, executive director of the Anderson Visitors Bureau and one of the event organizers. Children are free, and seniors pay $1.25 each for parking.

Benson compared the event — sanctioned by the International Jet Sport Association — to motorcross racing, with about 10 racers competing in a series of heats in a closed course. Qualifying races are today, with heats Saturday and final races on Sunday.

“They are side by side cutting each other off, handlebar to handlebar,” Benson said.

Professional racers are expected from across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, and possibly one from Indonesia.

The roughly half-mile circular course is visible from the shoreline or from the water near Sadlers Creek. Racers go around the course 18 to 20 times.

About 75 boats pulled up to watch the race from the water last year, Benson said.

Sadler’s Creek park, just off S.C. 187 in west Anderson, is completely shaded by large trees up to the shoreline, Benson said, so spectators won’t need to take their own shelter from the sun. She did suggest they take blankets and camp chairs.

Vendors also will be on hand, some of whom will be selling food. One of the event’s major sponsors is Coca-Cola.

“There will be fun interactive games,” Benson said. “There will be a lot of fun things to do.”

All the professional racers will have their equipment gathered in maintenance areas that spectators can tour as well.

“They have to work on their personal watercraft,” Benson said. “They won’t blow out a tire, but if something happens, they will need to get in the machine and work on it.”

A.J. Handler of Upstate, N.Y., Watercraft Promotions said racers of all ages and abilities will compete this weekend, but professional racers will be featured from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including a session of freestyle trick riding on Sunday.
